Sedgwick Elementary School Newsletter September 22, 2011 Parent/Teacher Conferences There will be no school for students this coming Monday, September 26, so that all parents can attend Parent/Teacher Conferences. Kindergarteners have screenings that day as well. One of our most important goals is getting 100% attendance at these conferences. If you need a ride or need to meet at another time, please let us know. If needed, students may come with their parent(s) to conferences and play in the gym while parents are meeting with teachers. Your scheduled conference time(s) has/have been sent home in your child’s communicator today. Please look for this important slip. Please make a point of attending these very important conferences. NECAP Testing NECAP Testing begins a week from Monday. Schedules for the testing have been sent home already. Please check your own calendars for any conflicts and change them if they interfere with the testing schedules. PLEASE AVOID ABSENCES DURING THE TESTING PERIOD. Parents have also been sent home copies of the released test items as a way to practice for the tests. Parents can work with students on individual problems and get a feel for what students will be asked. Please take a few minutes to look at these. Trim Carpenter We are looking for local contractors to bid on the replacement of building trim. If you are insured and a qualified carpenter, contact the principal for more details. Gr. K-4 Game Night The ever popular game night will be held for students in grades K-4 tomorrow, September 23 from 3:00-4:00 PM. A permission slip was sent home with your child on Monday. Parent helpers are always welcome. Game night is a free play and fun time supervised by the principal. Parent involvement is helpful so if you are available, you are most welcome to attend. There will be another game night scheduled for older kids soon. Weekly Afterschool Study Hall There will be an afterschool study hall for students in grades 5-8 from 3:00-4:00 on a weekly basis. The first one was held yesterday. Next week’s will be held on Tuesday, September 27 from 3:00-4:00. Your child must have parent permission to stay. Innisbrook Wrapping Paper Sale Anne Dentino has graciously volunteered to once again head up the Innisbrook Wrapping Paper sale this year. All proceeds raised benefits the PTF, so the PTF really needs someone to learn how to take over this fund raiser. The sale begins TODAY and will run through October 11. Catalogues have been sent home today. 5-8 to Common Ground Fair Grade 5-8 students are heading to the Common Ground Fair in Unity tomorrow. The bus leaves at 8:00 AM sharp, so don’t be late for school. Students will return to school around 4:30 p.m. and parents should plan on being here at the school at that time. Grades 5/6 Hit the High Seas On September 29, students in grades 5 and 6 will be sailing on local waters on the Hawkin’s sloop Vela, which is moored in the Benjamin River. In addition to learning about sailing, students will relive a bit of early Maine history. Family Style Meals In order to promote good manners and a sense of togetherness, grade K-4 students will be having meals served ‘Family Style’ at least once a month. Next Thursday, students will be dining together, serving food from dishes on the table, passing things back and forth and learning standard table manners, especially ‘please and thank you’. Proper Footwear There is uneven terrain on the playground, so your child should now be wearing closed toe footwear to prevent foot injuries. South American Artifacts Wanted The cultural focus for this year in Arts in Education is South America! Do you have anything from Brazil, Peru, Chile, or any other South American country to share? We would like to fill our display cases with things from these countries for our students to enjoy. Clothing, dolls, textiles, musical instruments, and pottery is all welcome. Please send in items to the school office. Thank you!
