Lego Robotics Sedgwick students took home five trophies from the Lego Robotics Northern Maine track meet held in Castine on Saturday, May 7. Team members tied for first place overall in a competition featuring 11 teams from the northern part of the state. The team of Daniel Fill and Sam Allen took first in the robot tractor pull; Maeghan Tobey won the robot speed build. Sheldon West took second in the fastest robot contest. Also taking second was Katrin Cote, Maeghan Tobey, Noah Gillen and Mackenzie Carter in the bridge competition. Their Lego bridge held 195 pounds and did not collapse! Congratulations and great job students! Rock Back The Clock Many thanks to the eighth grade students, those students in other grades, staff and especially Mrs. Bonnie Arendt, our grade 8 teacher, for their efforts on Friday night at Rock Back the Clock. It was a fun evening for everyone. What a nice thing it is to have the community in to the school for a good laugh at no one’s expense. Benefit Supper On Friday, May 20 at 5:00 PM there will be a benefit supper for Steve Pert in the gym. Steve is undergoing treatment for cancer. Wade Dow and his crew will perform and donations will be accepted. Kindergarten Orientation Incoming kindergarten students and their parents can expect a letter in the mail from the principal very soon. On Wednesday, May 25, next year’s kindergarteners are invited to come in for a group meeting, get a chance to meet one another and play in the gym or on the playground. A formal screening will take place in September. We hope to interview prospective kindergarten teachers next week. Water Safety for Grades 5/6 Starting this week, grades five and six students are learning to be safe around the water by attending a program at the Downeast Family YMCA every Thursday through June 9. No TV Week We had about 25 kids who eschewed TV for the week after vacation. A complete list is still being compiled as those student blue slips keep coming in. Students who did without TV will have a special game night on May 20. Thanks BEAR Night on April 29 was very well attended by about 40 students, and around 20 sixth through eighth graders spent the night reading, playing games outside and in the gym, went on the fitness trail and toasted marshmallows at a bonfire. It could not have happened without the help of staff and parents. Thanks go to Jennifer Tozier, Lynnette Grindle, Bonnie Arendt, and Beverly Hawkins for spending the night and numerous others for helping out. Also, thank you parents for contributing food and beverages for this event. Needed Item If anyone has empty kitty litter buckets you can donate, we need several for a ‘Field Day’ event in June. Just drop them by the school. Bike Safety/Bike-a-Thon On Thursday morning, May 19, students in grades 3-6 will have a presentation by John Sommo on bike safety. John will review rules of the road, bicycle maintenance, helmet laws and proper conduct on bicycles as part of curriculum provided from the state. In the afternoon, all students can take part in a Bike-a-Thon around the driveway of the school. Students will have the chance to raise some money for their classes if they want to bring in their bikes and helmets. Students must have bikes and helmets in good working condition to take part. Summer Scholarships The Sedgwick Children’s Committee will offer partial scholarships for families who need financial assistance for their children to attend summer programming. Applications will be available soon in the office. You must fill out an application to apply for a scholarship. Decisions will be made later this school year. Cards For Sale Sedgwick School art students have printed original cards and are selling some of them to help raise money for the Red Cross efforts in Japan. If you would like one of the 5x7 cards, they are on display in the school's lobby. Suggested donation is $5.00.
