Selectmen’s Minutes, Thurs., Dec. 11, 2008

Town of Sedgwick Maine

Selectmen’s Meeting

December 11, 2008  6:30PM

Selectmen present:  Nelson Grindal, Bill Jagger and Tom O'Connor. Other participants:  School Superintendent Bob Webster, School board member Michele Levesque and Michael Rossney.

  1. Approved the minutes of the December 9, 2008 selectmen’s meeting.

  1. Mr. Webster presented his views on the school budget process.  His position is that it is very difficult to have the budget ready for the Sedgwick town meeting which is very early in the year.  Mr. Webster stated that concrete numbers are not always available, so preparing the early budget requires some guess work on his part.  Selectmen were of the opinion that any major change could be corrected at a later date if necessary. The selectmen’s position is that the school budget is by far the largest component of the town budget and should be presented at the regular town meeting along with the municipal budget.  Mr. Webster and the School Board had requested that selectmen add a warrant article asking voters to move the meeting to mid or late April, voters have been asked twice in the last twenty years to move the annual town meeting.  Once it was passed and then rescinded the following year and the second time it was rejected.  Mr. Webster will consult with the school board to consider going forward with the date change request.

  1. Approved the Treasurers warrant (#24) in the amount of $84,906.62.  $66,831.71 of that amount was for school expenses.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:00PM.

Respectfully submitted,

Tom O'Connor
